Shekhar Verma is an ambitious boy born into a middle class family. Though born without a silver spoon he truly believes that everything silver and golden would one day be at his feet. As his parents and the middle class fraternity convince him that excellence in academics is the passport to a great life, Shekhar gives up his cricket bat for a pen and prepares to tackle the board exams of Classes X and XII. After scoring 90% in each of the exams, he again takes the advice of parents, who have been brain washed by their colleagues into believing that “IT is hot”. He lets go of prestigious commerce courses in reputed colleges to join a newly floated IT course which seems to offer better job prospects.
He soon finds out that the college he has joined is sub-standard and that after the IT bust, even his best efforts in the course will reap meager rewards. Shekhar starts to rebel against the system - bunking classes with his equally misguided friends and taking pride in scoring the lowest marks in exams.
He is saved from self-destruction by Anoushka, a sincere student who shakes him out of his stupor and convinces him to give life another shot. After initial confrontations, they fall in love and facing opposition from their parents on their “inter-community” match, they strive together to prove their worth to the world. Shekhar reads about MBAs from IIMs earning huge pay packets and jet setting across the world and decides to follow that path. Anoushka decides to continue her technical education, but this time, from the IITs - the pinnacles of technical education. They both achieve their goals - Anoushka makes it to IIT Mumbai and Shekhar makes it to IIM Bangalore after clearing one of the toughest exams in the world - CAT.
At IIMB, though, Shekhar faces a huge culture shock. While he had felt he had done enough by just making it to IIMB, he realizes that the fight had just begun. Within a week of attending hectic sessions in the day and dancing to the whims of mean seniors intent on ragging, Shekhar begins to question his ability to cope and whether the money that came after a life like this would ever be enough to make him happy.
He gets exposed to the various colorful personalities that make up life at IIMB - the dreaded Placecom headed by Crazy Panther, loud Northie Lafanders obsessed with booze and pornography, mild mannered Dosa Dudes, finance oriented Marwaris and wise Daddus. He also comes across Geniuses, Page 3s, and also Fighters like himself - people akin to wild card entrants in a grand slam who either didn't create any ripples or, ala Goran Ivanisevic, played the last tournament of their lives with all their heart and went on to become grand slam champions forever.
Amidst this menagerie, Shekhar decides to give his dreams one last shot, joining the toughest club on campus and slogging day and night for that extra mark in exams. He is helped by his new friends - Jitesh, the ultra-focused go-getter, Thomas, the easy going under-achiever, Vishal, the comic rebel with a cause and Richa, the Page-3 personality.
After six terms of back breaking work interspersed with comic escapades and drunken open-heart sessions, it's time for final placements. Shekhar decides he wants to be a consultant or a banker - both among the most coveted jobs on campus by virtue of the huge pay packets and glamorous locations. But there are a couple of hundred other people in his batch who want the same things as him - money and travel. Shekhar pulls out all stops, creating a resume that showcases his achievements over the past two years and tailors it to each company's requirements. He derives from his knowledge of the system and gets short listed by 5 companies on the fateful Day Zero - the day when consulting firms and international banks visit IIMB. But his past seems to catch up with him as he develops cold feet…
